Documentaire de Leon Cast qui revient sur le mythique combat de boxe entre Mohamed Ali et George Foreman en 1974 au Zaïre. Plus qu’un docu, ce film a tous les ingrédients d’une superproduction hollywoodienne : casting de stars, monde manichéen, héroïsme, sommes faramineuses en jeu et exotisme conradien.

Tout le monde a vu ou entendu parler du mythique combat qui opposa Mohamed Ali et Foreman au Zaïre. Mohamed Ali est devenu un boxeur « has been » à 35 ans ; il a perdu sa couronne et sa ceinture de champion, il sort de prison pour avoir refusé l’enrôlement dans la guerre du Vietnam. Ses deux derniers combats n’ont pas été brillants.

Quant à George Foreman, il a vingt ans et il est champion du monde ; c’est un tueur qui assomme tout ce qui est à portée de son immense poing de Titan. On en connaît l’issue, inattendue : Foreman défait au 8e round par Ali.

Ce qu’on ignore et que le film nous apprend, c’est l’entour du combat : les personnages, les enjeux, les conditions d’organisation du « Rumble in the jungle ». Et c’est ce qui fait de ce docu une sorte de biopic (biographic pictures) comme sait en faire Hollywood.

D’abord au niveau du casting, que des personnalités : tout ce que l’Amérique noire compte de stars du sport et de la musique : Foreman, Ali, Don King en parrain citant des vers de Shakespeare, Nat King Cole et James Brown (qui avait une moustache fournie en ces temps-là) sont du voyage.

Ainsi que Myriam Makéba (belle jeune fille en 1974). Et Norman Mailer, jeune écrivain prometteur et inventeur d’un nouveau journalisme est venu en reporter. Et de nombreux Noirs américains du gratin ont fait le déplacement qui, à leurs yeux, est tout un symbole. Leurs ancêtres ont quitté le sol africain, les chaînes aux pieds pour l’Amérique.

Eux, les descendants de ces esclaves, reviennent libres et auréolés de gloire. S’ils portent des chaînes aujourd’hui, c’est autour du cou et parce qu’elles sont en or. Enfants prodiges, ils reviennent en pèlerinage sur la terre des ancêtres. Pour des retrouvailles avec les frères d’Afrique.

Ensuite on suit pas à pas la préparation au combat des adversaires. Ali est le personnage central du film. Il est omniprésent. On le voit en conférence de presse, dans son hôtel, à l’entraînement, en ville en train de hurler qu’il va vaincre Foreman. Il en fait des tonnes, des montagnes de rodomontades. C’est une belle gueule mais surtout une grande gueule. Et ça plaît : à la presse, aux Zaïrois, qui l’adoptent d’emblée et à tout le monde.

Foreman parle peu. C’est un homme qui aime l’ombre. Il n’est pas photogénique pour un radis. C’est une montagne de muscles qu’accompagne un gros chien, et les Zaïrois ont vite fait de l’assimiler aux odieux colons belges qui aimaient parader avec des chiens policiers. La caméra zoom le large cratère que ses poings creusent dans le sac de cognée. Fort comme il l’est, ce doit être une brute, suggère-t-on au spectateur. On en fait vite le méchant du film. Celui qui risque de tuer le gentil Ali. On glisse subrepticement dans la haine.

Et il y a réellement quelque chose de haineux dans ces mille gorges déployées qui crient : « Ali Boma yé », c’est-à-dire « Ali, tue-le » au stade de Kinsasha.. Et de déstabilisateur pour un boxeur de sentir sur sa personne l’épaisse haleine de haine de tout un stade.

Au 8e round, contre toute attente, Ali l’envoie d’un uppercut au tapis. Et la caméra de saisir au ralenti la lente chute du géant : le gant sur la tête, le choc qui fait vaciller la tête, et le corps désarticulé qui va à la rencontre du tapis ! Seconde après seconde. Le gentil Ali a vaincu le méchant George. David a terrassé Goliath. Ouf ! la morale est sauve.

Mais le film fini, toute la stratégie de manipulation et de mise à mort d’un homme, ici George Foreman, saute aux yeux. Le héros n’est pas celui qu’on croit. Comme le dit si bien Albert Camus, « un homme est plus homme par ce qu’il tait que par ce qu’il dit ». Et Ali dit trop.

Ali a beau clamer que son cachet de millions de dollars servira à construire un hôpital aux USA, il ne peut nous convaincre qu’il ne participe pas au pillage des deniers du peuple zaïrois. Onze millions de dollars ont été pris dans les caisses de l’Etat par le dictateur Mobutu pour ce combat.

D’ailleurs, les retrouvailles entres Noirs américains et leurs frères africains grâce à ce combat « au cœur des ténèbres » est juste un argument marketing. La rencontre entre Africains et Noirs américains n’a pas eu lieu. Un montage alterné nous montre les Zaïrois en haillons dans les champs, des régimes de bananes ou des fagots de bois sur la tête tandis que les Américains descendent des avions, les bras chargés de bagages, tirant des valises et les grues descendant des caisses de matériel. Dénuement d’un côté, profusion de l’autre.

Quand les Américains croisent les Zaïrois, c’est soit la valetaille des hôtels qui est à leur service, soit les dirigeants, qui sont tout autant coupés du peuple. Pendant un footing, Mohamed Ali s’arrêtera au bord d’une route pour discuter avec des badauds, c’est tout ! Et c’est mince !

Surgit alors l’évidence : sur toute la ligne, Ali a manipulé le monde. D’abord les pauvres Zaïrois, en se faisant passer pour un des leurs et en leur jetant en pâture le jeune Foreman. Il pousse le cynisme à son paroxysme lorsqu’au 2e round il transforme ce combat de boxe en un duel de gladiateurs et réussit à exciter la soif de sang du peuple, qui appellera au meurtre.

Instant où le boxeur Ali devient Jules César et le stade de Kin le Colisée ! Même sur le plan tactique, il dupera son monde : ainsi il passera son temps à annoncer qu’il va danser autour du lourdaud Foreman. Par conséquent, celui-ci s’entraînera avec des sparring-partners très mobiles pour contrer la boxe virevoltante d’Ali. Las ! Sur le ring, Ali se tasse dans les cordes, réduisant à néant la préparation de Foreman à un combat d’une grande mobilité. Il lui fera aussi perdre son self-control en le défiant par des insultes. Pas du tout fair- play.

Foreman est un boxeur. Juste un boxeur. Qui pense qu’un homme doit bien faire ce qu’il sait faire et laisser la politique aux politiciens et les boniments aux vendeurs d’illusion. Mais Ali est un « people » qui utilise le ring, la politique et les médias avec une grande intelligence. Ce fut un combat très inégal entre un jeune boxeur de 20 ans et un as de la manipulation. Et Foreman sort grandi de ce documentaire fait exprès pour alimenter la légende de Mohamed. Au grand dam du réalisateur. On voulait nous vendre un héros : Ali. Nous découvrons un homme « humain, trop humain » : Foreman.

Vous avez certes un talent d’écrivain en langue française mais ça s’arrête là. Vous croyez faire la critique d’un documentaire mais en réalité vous avez fait la critique d’un personnage, historique de surcroît, Mohammed Ali. Dès le début on sent votre empressement à à faire croire que vous êtes au dessus de la masse et que vous avez un point de vue original. Mais au fond il n’en est rien car on sent plutôt une lecture version occidentale de l’histoire et des faits. On parle de l’Afrique comme "étant le coeur des ténèbres", paraphrasant Joseph Conrad, sans compter le fait de considérer Kinshasa comme la "jungle". Si ces représentations de l’Afrique sont très courant dans le monde occidental, on ne saurait comprendre qu’un africain comme vous en soit réduit à les répéter sans remise en question et comble de l’ironie, faire passer son point de vue pour original.

Les Américains qui sont dans des hotels et les zaïrois dans les champs en haillons est tout aussi caractéristique de la mauvaise fois des occidentaux qui dénigrent tout événement historique quand ils n’en sont pas au centre. Qu’est-ce que vous voulez ? Que Ali et ses compagnons aillent passer la nuit en campagne pour montrer qu’ils sont venus "rencontrer les Africains" comme si l’Afrique s’y réduisait ? Bref, vous ferez mieux d’ajouter à votre talent une certaine intelligence et surtout autonomie de vue pour recentrer votre vision du monde en Afrique car vous êtes africains en lieu et place d’épouser des idées euro-centrées qui se font passer pour universelles même si nos livres en sont pleins.
